What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

In simple terms CBT means;

  • Cognition the way we perceive and think.

  • Behaviour the way we react and behave and

  • Change which includes therapy, coaching and other methods for changing the perception and behaviour.

CBT looks at why people think and behave in the way they do. CBT is about identifying and rectifying inappropriate learnt behaviour. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) allows the client to be able to reflect and the therapist will try and allow the client to be honest. CBT has been found to be affective across all age groups.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy identifies;

  • The type of problems a client is experiencing.

  • Understands why a particular problem persists by defining the problem.

  • Sets SMART goals that are (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely).

  • Uses behavioural activation to start tackling the client’s problem.

  • Detects the client’s unhelpful thinking and behaviour.

  • Changes the client’s unhelpful thinking and behaviour by 1) evaluating their thoughts and 2) using behavioural experiments.

  • Helps the client to reach a new perspective in their life.

  • Helps the client deal with setbacks.

  • Helps the client to make changes that last.
